Intergenerational Idols attracts large crowd at Marriott DTC

The Villager

By Gerri Sweeney

The Intergenerational Idols event was in full swing May 7 at the Marriott DTC thanks to a host of chairs and volunteers. The event co-chairs were Adam Angelich, LaFawn Biddle and former first lady Frances Owens. Attendees were busy checking out the numerous silent auction items gathered by co-chairs Mary McNicholas and Lou Walters.

During the silent auction the Vista Village Chime Ringers Choir provided music from Mountain Vista Retirement Community and Cherry Creek High School Band and Orchestra Ensembles. The Mile Highlanders led the attendees to the dining room decorated by Rosalina Diecidue, Martha Kelce and Kay Ray. Amy Zhou provided dinner music.

Performers must be older than 65 or younger than 18 years of age. Stephanie Riggs was the emcee for the stage show. Performers were LaFawn Biddle, Eli Acosta, guitarist; Duchesses of Windsor dancers, Sophie Johnson-Grimes, vocalist with Lori Lynne Lawson, piano accompanist; Wayne Stratton, vocalist; Colorado Dance Sport presented Amber Goldsmith and Drayton Harvey; Michelle Rahn, vocalist, accompanying herself on guitar; Gus Freebern, vocalist; Sound Idea Barbershop Quartet, Tom Graesser, Terry Suwyn, Claude Barnes and Jerry Lippert. St. Mary's Academy Honor Choir, Salpi Bocchieriyan and Lauren Morris were the stage managers. The talent co-chairs were Jamie Angelich and Linda Holloway.

The event will benefit the work of Bessie's Hope, formerly Rainbow Bridge, the only organization in the country that enhances the quality of life for nursing home/assisted-living elders and brings generations together in mutually rewarding relationships by training and working with youth groups, families, individuals, companies and other organizations. Bessie's Hope makes dreams come true for nursing home/ assisted living elders; many that only receive one visit per year by family members. The video was very touching to see the interaction of the young visitors at the nursing homes and the senior residents.

Talent of All Ages

The Intergenerational Idols Dinner Show, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. May 7 at the Marriott–Denver Tech Center, features 10 acts with performers under the age of 18 or over 65. The sixth installment of the event includes a Lone Tree grade school student and a woman who was named Ms. Senior America in 2004.

Amy Zhou, a 12-year-old virtuoso pianist, astounded the crowd last year, receiving a standing ovation after her performance at Intergenerational Idols. She consistently wins first place in regular competitions, and plans to wow the audience this year. Senior Michelle Rahn will also bring her talents to the big stage.

The event benefits Bessie’s Hope, a Denver-based organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life for nursing home and assisted-living residents and bringing generations together in mutually rewarding relationships by honoring the human spirit. Bessie’s Hope, formerly known as Rainbow Brigde, provides volunteer opportunities for youths, families, individuals, community organizations and businesses. Piano prodigy Zhou volunteers for Bessie’s Hope playing for and visiting with the nursing home elders.

Pomp and circumstance will abound as the Pipes and Drums of the Mile Highlanders lead guests from the silent auction to the ballroom for dinner. Highlands Ranch resident Andy Ross plays the pipes, and volunteers for Bessie’s Hope by visiting those in the nursing homes and assisted-living communities.
