Bessie’s Hope enhances the quality of life for nursing home and assisted living elders by bringing generations together in mutually rewarding relationships that honor the human spirit and create life-enriching volunteer opportunities for youth, families, individuals, community organizations and businesses.
Why Intergenerational Programs Are Needed
Since its inception in 1993, Bessie’s Hope has been a respected and award-winning organization in the field of intergenerational programming. There was a time in this country when multiple generations lived near each other or in the same household. Today, it is common that families live in separate states and different countries. creating generational segregation and the erosion of respect of elders and a lack of empathy and compassion toward each other. If we don’t weave all ages into the fabric of our lives, we’re left with a much weaker society. Bessie’s Hope engages all segments of the community through our three primary volunteer programs that provide education and training for all volunteers.
Youth and Elders Service-Learning Program facilitates structured and ongoing interaction between schools, and other youth groups, and nursing home/assisted living re residents.
Family and Elders Program trains youth, adults and families in order that they may become companions, advocates and families for nursing home/assisted living elders who receive little or no visitation.
Community and Elders Program involves the orientation, coordination and facilitation of nursing home/assisted living visits for company employees and organization members.
